I
had so much fun with this week’s Splitcoaststampers' Sketch Challenge #SC664 that I created two cards using
the same sketch!
For
my first card, I modified the sketch a bit and put the oval toward the side as well as increased layer #2 to fit the sentiment. Also, the "faux" feathers were created by stamping the images onto vanilla cardstock, heat embossing, watercoloring and fussy-cuting for an additional embellishment with the metal brad.
In an effort to use some of my older stamps more frequently, I pulled out the long ago retired Stampin’ Up! Pheasant Thoughts stamp
set (circa 2003) and paired it with the current Scripture Medley 3 stamp set (Verve
Stamps).
I also incorporated the Simon Monday “Heavy Metal” Challenge (metal brad) along with the Alphabet Challenge “’O’ for Oval”Challenge and the Addicted to Stamps and More #261 “Anything Goes” Challenge.
If
you have not had a chance to check out the Splitcoaststampers Sketch #SC664 Gallery or
the other challenge sites yet, I hope you will find the time to do so- wonderful
inspiration from all!
To
create this card:
1).
Ink the Pheasant Thoughts main pheasant image and long feathers with Versafine™
Black Onyx Ink, stamp onto Very Vanilla cardstock, apply clear embossing powder
and heat set with the heat tool. Once
the embossing has cooled, use an AquaPainter™ with Tim Holtz® Distress Inks (I
used Vintage Photo and Tea Dye) to watercolor the feathers and Ground Espresso
and Walnut Stain for the main bird image.
2).
Use the Big Shot™ with Oval Stitched Dies to die cut the pheasant image as well
as an additional oval from Early Espresso cardstock. Split the Early Espresso
oval in half and layer behind the die cut pheasant oval (allowing just a bit of the espresso cardstock to show).
3).
Fussy cut the feathers and cut into the images to mimic real feathers.
4).
Trim a piece of Early Espresso cardstock to 4 ¼” x 5 ½” for the card front, add
the embossed layer of designer paper to the top half of the card front (embossed
with a woodgrain folder-FYI, I had this piece in my stash already embossed and
ready to go), add a piece of coordinating paper to the lower half (per the
sketch).
5).
De-static the lower portion of the designer paper with an embossing powder
tool, stamp the sentiment from Scripture Medley 3 (Verve Stamps) with Versafine™
Black Onyx Ink, apply clear embossing powder and heat set with the heat
tool.
6).
Add the strip of 5/8” Dark Brown Satin Ribbon and knotted Polished Hemp Twine
to the card front (this covers the seam in the center).
7).
Add the focal image oval with dimensional foam and mount the feathers along
with the Antique Brad to the card front (FYI- I used hot glue to mount all of
the elements on this card). Mount the
entire card front onto the white card base.
8).
Add a bit of Tim Holtz® Picket Fence Distress Stain with a paint brush to the
pheasant image to lighten some of the feathers around his face and chest.
9).
Finish off the card by adding shimmer to the pheasant as well as the fussy-cut “faux”
feathers using a clear shimmer pen.
